Every day, nearly 5000 children are admitted into hospital. Some stay only a few days, others for weeks, undergoing serious and other painful treatment. During that time, they live to the rhythm of their doctoring and care, away from their family, cut off from their friends and from “normal life”.
Every day, countless children drop out of school, lose confidence in themselves, or simply stop believing in the possibility of a happy future. The difference in their life, between happiness and destitution, is sometimes just a little bit of encouragement, of inspiration, and of positive reinforcement.
Every day, anywhere between 250 and 1,500 people spend the night on the street in London alone, and over 380,000 people in the UK are without a roof over their heads. The difference in their day can often be made by a few hours of relief, of entertainment, and warmth.
This is where we come in.
The Magic Reel is a new UK charity that aims to use the power of film to assist ill and disabled children through long periods of hospitalization. We bring them currently on release films, pre‐release films, on a big screen, on high‐definition or 35mm film. The screenings are free, the prints are brand new, and the equipment manned by professionals. We even provide cinema seats and a concession stand. Sometimes an actor or filmmaker will tag along to watch the film and have a chat afterwards. We help the children and hospital staff work out a screening time everyone can attend, and then all we need to do is pick up this week’s film, drive up in our van, and transform the hospital’s conference room or common room into a unique cinema.
